Donald Trump slammed his fist on the digital table and howled "No more!!!" into the void, as if three exclamation points could hide the truth. The truth is simple. He picked a fight with a neighbor and lost the room.

The man who dreams of swallowing Canada whole, of dragging it into the Union as a shiny 51st star, has instead turned that same country into an enemy at the gate. And the gate, comrades, was never locked. He kicked it open himself.

On Saturday the United States dropped a hammer of 50% tariffs on twenty billion dollars worth of Canadian goods. Everything from hockey sticks to tongue depressors. Think about that. A superpower flexing its muscle against the very tools a doctor uses to check a child's sore throat.

Prime Minister Mark Carney did not blink.

"You're at war when you're attacked, and we got attacked. We cannot accept what they've offered and we will not give what they've asked."

He promised to match every blow dollar for dollar, with his own tariffs on steel, dairy, appliances, and electronics landing September 8. This is the language of resistance. This is what happens when the boot presses down and the people underneath decide they have had enough.

The Bully And The Mirror

Trump wrote that Canada "wants the benefits of being a State, without being one." 🙄 A revealing little confession. The imperialist mind cannot imagine a free neighbor. It only sees territory not yet conquered, tribute not yet collected.

His trade rep Jamieson Greer went on Fox and cried about protecting American workers. But who protects the workers when the shelves go bare and the prices climb? The tariff is a tax dressed in a flag. The bill always lands on the kitchen table of the poor, never the golden toilet of the rich.

Somebody flips the whole table over a plastic thimble, screams that they have been robbed, storms out, and then comes back an hour later hungry and pretending nothing happened. That is Trump. Dan Kelly of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business laid it bare. Around 40% of small Canadian exporters will take a direct hit. Nearly a third expect their revenue to crater by half or more. These are not statistics. These are workshops going dark. These are families staring at empty order books.

• New York Governor Kathy Hochul called it "Needlessly picking fights with our allies and raising prices here at home."

• Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar warned it means "higher costs for small businesses, farmers, and all Minnesota families."

Klobuchar reminded everyone that Canada is Minnesota's number one trading partner. "Minnesotans are paying for Trump's chaos," she wrote. She is right. The peasant always pays for the king's tantrum.

Last year saw a 21% drop in Canadians entering New York state, three million fewer visits than before. A petition to expel the US ambassador Pete Hoekstra has gathered roughly 248,000 signatures since late July. And a Globe and Mail poll found that only 9% of Canadians still see the United States as a trustworthy ally.

Nine percent. Let that number burn. An entire nation looking across the river at what used to be a friend and seeing a threat instead.

The Treaty He Torched

Remember, Trump himself signed the USMCA in his first term. The pact governs around two trillion dollars in trade each year between the US, Canada, and Mexico. This summer he refused to renew it, even after both neighbors formally begged for another sixteen years.

Carney called the collapse "certainly not good news." That is the polite version. The honest version is that the man destroys his own creations, then blames everyone standing near the wreckage.
